Māris Grunskis

I’m photographer from Latvia currently living in Jyväskylä, Finland.

I shoot mostly nature, macro, events, architecture and landscapes.

I started taking photographs as a teenager because I wanted… no, in fact I really needed to capture the moments that I found beautiful. It all started with sunsets, countryside and Daugavpils Fortress. Later I took photos wherever I felt like doing it. I took pictures during my studies of biology in University of Latvia, enjoying Latvian nature, working as a hydrobiologist, zoo keeper or working in Daugavpils Fortress, living in Riga and Daugavpils or visiting other places.

From 2009 till 2015 I was fascinated by urban exploration and photography of abandoned places and urban environments. Results of my urban exploration experience were showcased in 2014, in the exhibition “Ghosts” in Latvian Museum of Photography.

Daugavpils Fortress is a special place for me. I first started exploring it back in my childhood and became seriously interested in the history of the place. I even worked there from 2014 to 2018 – organizing events, guiding tours, creating visual materials. Many photos were taken there, including photo series of “Changing Fortress”, that you can find on page Exhibitions.

In December 28th, 2018, my exhibition of macro photography “Reptiles in details” was opened at Riga Zoo Terrarium.

I am open to different ideas from shooting macro or architecture photography to guiding photography workshops. My contacts you can find below.
