Māris Grunskis
I’m a photographer living in Jyväskylä, Finland.
I shoot portraits, events, architecture, cityscape, landscapes, nature, and macro.
Check my Instagram account for recent photos.
I was born in Latvia and lived there until 2018. I started taking photographs as a teenager because I wanted to capture the moments that I found beautiful. It started simply with sunsets, the countryside, and Daugavpils Fortress. Later I took photos wherever I felt like doing it – during my studies of biology at the University of Latvia, enjoying Latvian nature, working as a hydrobiologist and zookeeper while living in Riga, working in Daugavpils Fortress, or visiting other places.
From 2009 till 2015 I was fascinated by urban exploration and photography of abandoned places and urban environments. Results of my urban exploration experience were showcased in 2014, in the exhibition “Ghosts” in the Latvian Museum of Photography.
Daugavpils Fortress is a special place for me. I first started exploring it back in my childhood and became seriously interested in the history of the place. I even worked there from 2014 to 2018 – organizing events, guiding tours, and creating visual materials. Many photos were taken there, including a photo series of “Changing Fortress”, that you can find on page Exhibitions.
On December 28th, 2018, my exhibition of macro photography “Reptiles in Details” was opened at Riga Zoo Terrarium.
My latest exhibition “The Haunting Heritage” was on display from the 11th of August until the 10th of September 2023 at Kuusisto Art Manor, on Kuusisto island near Turku.
Feel free to contact me if you are interested in any kind of photoshoot, illustration, or graphic design. I am open to different ideas from shooting macro and portraits to architecture and events as well as guiding photography workshops. I am always interested in trying and learning something new!
